PALM SPRINGS FILM FESTIVAL - JANUARY 6TH, 2020

So, I had my fifteen minutes of fame when I attended the premier of the Leo Zahn film; ICONICITY, which includes a snippet, and I mean a snippet of Desert Christ Park. Filming was done last March & I was honored that Roxanne asked me to be the voice of the Park & the works of Frank Antone Martin.

The film is an 89 minute documentary of the many desert art colonies dotting the wide-open, barren desert of the Coachella Valley & beyond. I guess the beyond is Yucca Valley & Joshua Tree. Bordering on the weird, the film mainly focuses on the off-grid, eccentric, & iconoclastic desert artists who have taken up residency in such places as Slab City & Bombay Beach, a residential artists haven on the edge of the dying Salton Sea. Not that Antone Martin was not an eccentric artist. He was. Yet, he was also reverent to the times and the art he created. He was purposeful in his work and deliberate in his methodology. He didn’t get a mystical energy from the desert. He had a God-given talent to create, and he shared it with the desert. Built to withstand an atomic blast, the statues at Desert Christ Park it will be here long after Bombay Beach.

Anyway, now I can say I’ve been on the big screen and we both can say we have seen our names “in lights".

Other featured art venues were the Noah Purifoy Foundation in Joshua Tree; Salvation Mountain, near Slab City; The Anza Borrego Desert Natural History Association, featuring the artistry of Ricardo Breceda; & Furstworld in Joshua Tree.
