ACCOMMODATIONS

Finding accommodations that fit your pocket book can be daunting. Start early in your planning process and book ahead. Well traveled and popular places can get booked out quite quickly, so don’t dilly dally. If you think you might want to hang your hat for a couple of days somewhere, book it. You can always cancel or amend it if your itinerary changes, but at least you have it. This process can get tangled, so keep a running tab of your trip by place, date, and hotel. That way your reservations are easily retrieved for whatever issues arise. I have been known to book several hotels for different dates until plans were finalized.

Hotels generally offer free cancellations, some up to the day before your stay. Look over their cancellation policy before you book. Prepay isn’t always the best route. They may be a few bucks cheaper, but it can get dicey if you have to cancel and want a refund. So check their policy for prepay cancellations.

TIP: I keep a running tab by creating folders in my email. Makes sense, since you will generally book through on-line sources and receive confirmation emails, once booked. This way, reservations are easily retrieved for whatever issues may arise. NOTE: Make sure you cancel the unneeded bookings once your plans are set to avoid the charges of running up on your cancellation window.

If you are doing a self-drive trip, look for places that offer parking. It’s not always possible, so be flexible. If you’re using primarily public transportation, i.e., trains, buses, taxi’s, perhaps a hotel in town would be best to facilitate walking about and enjoying the night life. If you’re on a tour, it’s all taken care of. Just enjoy.

TIP: Book with value in mind. Book rooms that include breakfast in the cost. Bed and Breakfasts are often a good way to go, but research them first and remember their website may not be up-to-date and some only take cash. If there are reviews, read them. Book on a reputable site rather than google the town and pick one that looks good. If possible, book direct.

TIP: If staying for a while and in one place, consider renting an apartment or VRBO.
